Dominic Calvert-Lewin now has scored six goals in five Premier League games for Leeds United after starring in the Whites’ 4-1 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday night.

There’s talk of a World Cup call-up for Calvert-Lewin, who has even outscored Erling Haaland over the last five matches. It is turning out to be a stroke of genius from Adam Underwood and manager Daniel Farke.

A brace in Saturday’s win over Crystal Palace has only fuelled the talk of a call-up from Thomas Tuchel, with England facing one international break in March before the Three Lions travel to the Americas.

It comes after Calvert-Lewin left Everton. Whether it was his decision to start afresh, or Everton decided not to hand the injury-prone striker a new deal, is unclear. Jermaine Beckford said he needed a new start.

Wayne Rooney thinks Everton were right to let Calvert-Lewin go

Perhaps that new start has allowed Calvert-Lewin to focus on his fitness. Leeds’ physios are becoming renowned for their work behind the scenes, and so far, they have got Calvert-Lewin fitter than ever.

But according to Wayne Rooney, his old Everton teammate, the Toffees were right to let Calvert-Lewin go. Rooney also told his BBC podcast that Everton could do with Calvert-Lewin right now, given his form.

“I’m delighted for him, Everton could do with him! Everton made the right decision. Recently, he was never fit. He was out of contract. It would have been very difficult for Everton to give him a new contract.

“He’s gone to Leeds, he’s kept himself fit, the physios are doing a good job. When he’s fit – I’ve played with him – he’s such a handful. Great in the air, great in both boxes. On a run like this, he’s a real handful.”

What Calvert-Lewin did on the Leeds bench after coming off

What Leeds fans love about Calvert-Lewin, aside from his goals, is his utter willingness to shine in a Leeds shirt. Speaking in the Sky Sports studio after Brentford, he underlined his desire to do well for the Whites.

He told Leeds fans on Instagram after his brace that he “loves” it at Elland Road. His celebration after one of his Leeds goals saw him point at the badge while in front of Leeds supporters, as Leeds won 4-1.

Nigel Martyn said Calvert-Lewin was celebrating on the Leeds bench when Anton Stach curled home a brilliant fourth for Leeds. Calvert-Lewin is in a great place, but he’s doing it all for the love of his new club.
