Daniel Farke has confirmed Patrick Bamford will not take Leeds United’s next penalty after his costly miss last night.
Farke was speaking in his post-match press conference following the defeat at Stoke City, in which Bamford missed the chance from 12 yards to put Leeds ahead.
Bamford was brought on with around 20 minutes to play at the bet365 Stadium, coming on in place of Joel Piroe, who according to Farke, is Leeds’ first choice taker.
However, with the 24-year-old off the pitch, Bamford was the man who immediately signalled his desire to take it, despite the best efforts of Crysencio Summerville.
Perhaps unsurprisingly for most Leeds fans, Bamford ended up blazing his penalty way over the bar, with Stoke then going onto net a late winner just a matter of minutes later.
Farke says Bamford will not take next penalty
When asked if Bamford will take Leeds’ next penalty, Farke confirmed that he would not be doing so, having ‘wanted to prove the doubters wrong’ yesterday.
“I haven’t spoken to him. His first miss under my regime. After raising it, next game a different player will take one. Patrick is the most disappointed in the dressing room. I do not need to address it with him.
“He wanted to prove the doubters wrong. He does not have to prove anyone wrong. Perhaps it is the right decision to let someone else take one on this run of misses he has had.”
Leeds love to portray a mantra of side before self but these quotes from Farke only indicate that Bamford was being incredibly selfish in the moment of the penalty.
Bamford is bereft of any confidence in front of goal and has missed his last two penalties for Leeds, and should not have been anywhere near taking it.
It is all well and good saying now he will not be on the next one, but ultimately it is too late with another vital three points dropped.
