Crysencio Summerville asked Pascal Struijk if he could take the penalty in Leeds United’s defeat at Stoke City this evening.
That is according to Leeds Live journalist Beren Cross, who shared details of Summerville’s interaction with Struijk prior to Patrick Bamford’s miss from the spot.
Just minutes after coming on, Bamford won Leeds the chance to go in front as he went down under a challenge from Stoke midfielder Ben Pearson, resulting in Paul Tierney to point to the spot.
Immediately after the awarding of the penalty, Bamford immediately said that he would take it, as he searches for his first goal of the season.
With the score at 0-0, Bamford then sent his penalty miles over the cross bar which ultimately cost Leeds the game, as Stoke ended up going in front through a Struijk own goal.
Summerville asked Struijk to take the pen
Bamford has now missed his last three spot kicks for Leeds, both of which have now cost the team in crucial moments.
His first miss came against Arsenal just over a year ago. Had he scored, Leeds would’ve most likely gone onto earn an impressive point, but instead succumbed to a 1-0 defeat.
Bamford then also missed a huge penalty against Newcastle United in May, which would’ve put Leeds 2-0 ahead in a crucial math in their bid to avoid the drop. The game ended 2-2.
With just how low on confidence he is, this was a really selfish move from Bamford which has again cost his side at a crucial moment. His record from the spot is dreadful.
Summerville on the other hand, is full of confidence after his two goal showing at Norwich City and also scored his last penalty for Leeds in the shootout at Salford City back in August.
