Leeds United are being linked with a move for Liverpool’s Calvin Ramsay this month as the search for a new right-back continues – and Phil Hay says Leeds came close to signing him beforehand.

Ramsay, 20, has endured a tough 18 months since his £6.5m move to Liverpool from Aberdeen – just four appearances at senior level since. Two for Liverpool, and then two on loan at Preston this term.

That season-long loan with Ryan Lowe’s Preston was cancelled by Liverpool earlier this month – but he is set to go on loan again. Assistant manager Pep Ljinders confirming he will be going temporarily.

But, he is yet to move. Leeds are among the clubs considering the Scotland international, but his injury record does make him a bit of an uncertainty. A risky signing, when Leeds need a reliable right-back.

Hay was asked about Liverpool’s young right-back on the latest Square Ball podcast and he confirmed that Leeds are interested – and says that Victor Orta almost signed Ramsay while he was at Aberdeen.

“You will have seen Calvin Ramsay linked from Liverpool. He’s been on Leeds’ radar for a long time. Going back to previous regime, he was one of the players Orta scouted while he was up at Aberdeen.

“Leeds were pretty close to getting him actually, but he would have been an academy signing. Leeds know about Ramsay inside out. He didn’t get many games at Preston and was recalled,” Hay claimed.

Is Ramsay the man to come in and solve our issues on the right of defence? Well, Ramsay is clearly a talent and is well-liked at Elland Road. That, and the Scottish ace can play on both sides of the defence.

But, is he good enough? He certainly does not start above Archie Gray – who is expected to be okay despite being concerned he had suffered a bad injury on Wednesday. Or, Junior Firpo on the left flank.

Ramsay should only be seen as a last resort this month, if Leeds fail to bring in any other options on the shortlist. Certainly, the likes of Connor Roberts should be considered ahead of Liverpool’s Ramsay.
