Tony Dorigo thinks Tottenham player was ‘lucky’ not to be sent off in first half v Leeds United

Leeds United will feel hard done by not to come away with anything on Saturday as Tottenham secured a 2-1 win over Daniel Farke’s side. But Spurs were as lucky as Leeds felt unlucky.

Wayne Rooney had sympathy for both Leeds and Daniel Farke in his analysis after the game, with Leeds boasting the better chances, more shots and the majority of possession over Thomas Frank’s Spurs.

Alan Shearer said Spurs’ speed in transition won the game despite Leeds boasting better chances, while Chris Sutton dismissed a Spurs fan claiming his side are in a title race, saying Leeds were the better side.

Ultimately, Spurs won because they have better individual players. They took their chances, both goals coming via deflections off Pascal Struijk. But Tony Dorigo thinks Spurs got “lucky” for another reason.

Tony Dorigo thinks Joao Palhinha should have been sent off

Summer signing Palhinha, who joined Tottenham on loan from Bayern Munich, was booked for a late tackle on Brenden Aaronson after the in-form American played a pass through to Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

But Palhinha didn’t stop there. The Portugal star was seen berating referee Thomas Bramall, who also got criticism from Leeds fans at full-time. Palhinha then suggested Aaronson was diving to the linesman.

Speaking while co-commentating on LUTV, Dorigo said that Palhinha was a “lucky boy” and believed the Spurs player had done enough to earn a second yellow card with his reaction to his first booking.

“He’s giving it to the referee verbally, after a challenge like that? The referee is going to put up with that? Absolutely not. He’s [Palhinha] doing everything [after Palhinha suggested Aaronson dived],” Dorigo said.

“Now he’s giving it to the referee’s assistant. What is going on? It’s a yellow card in itself when you do that. He’s had a few things there, he’s a lucky boy,” Dorigo continued, alongside commentator Bryn Law.

Where do Leeds sit in the Premier League table after weekend?

Leeds had gone into the weekend in 11th position with eight points from six games. But having been unable to add to their tally on Saturday, The Whites have now dipped into 15th, while Spurs go third.

Leeds have been good, but cannot rest on their laurels. They cannot think that they deserve to have more, even though they probably do after outplaying Spurs, and conceding late to Fulham and Bournemouth.

The next two games are massive for Leeds. A trip to newly-promoted Burnley, a side that took five points off Leeds last season in the Championship. Then, a home game against Nuno Espirito Santo’s West Ham.
