Three Leeds United players trigger clauses as 49ers forced to pay out, including £1.8m for Joel Piroe

Leeds United’s promotion to the Premier League will trigger a number of promotion clauses owed to other teams, it has been revealed.

Leeds United secured promotion to the Premier League on Monday night after watching Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United succumb to fourth defeat in five, losing 2-1 at Burnley.

Earlier in the day, Leeds United thumped Stoke City 6-0 with Joel Piroe scoring four goals to put himself in contention to win the Championship Golden Boot, having previously not scored in eight games for the Whites.

Daniel Farke earns a third career promotion from the Championship as manager but he knows the biggest test for him lies ahead, having already demanded a big summer transfer window at Leeds United.

But first things first: the owners must pay up a number of promotion clauses, one such clause being for Piroe, owed to his former club Swansea City.

Leeds United owe promotion clauses on Joel Piroe, Ao Tanaka, and Largie Ramazani

Posting on X, journalist Darren Witcoop has revealed how Leeds United now owe the likes of Piroe’s former club Swansea City, as well Ao Tanaka‘s former club Fortuna Dusseldorf and Largie Ramazani‘s former club Almeria promotion clauses, having signed all three players for transfer fees.

Witcoop reveals that Leeds United’s Championship rivals Swansea City are now owed £1.8million, adding to the £10.5million they paid to sign the Dutchman in the summer of 2023. Leeds United paid £3.4million for Tanaka and a rumoured fee of around £10million for Ramazani.

Witcoop posted on X: “Leeds will pay promotion clauses to several clubs following their Premier League return. Swansea will bank £1.8m for Joel Piroe while Fortuna Düsseldorf (Al Tanaka) and Almeria (Largie Ramazani) also in line for a cash bonus as part of their deals.”

How much Leeds United earn for promotion to the Premier League

Assuming that Ramazani’s promotion fee could be similar to Piroe’s, given they cost about the same, and assuming that Tanaka’s won’t be nearly as much, it’s still a relatively small amount for Leeds United, especially as they’ll now bear the riches of the Premier League.

Football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley previously told Leeds Live that promotion to the Premier League this season would see Leeds United rake in between £70-80million, given that they’ve had parachute payments and have now returned to the top flight within three years of relegation.

And with the huge amount of money they made in the transfer window last summer after selling the likes of Archie Gray and Georginio Rutter for a combined £70million, we could still see a whirlwind summer at Elland Road this time round.
