Ao Tanaka has become a hero at Leeds United in record time after joining the club in 2024.

Leeds United signed Ao Tanaka in the 11th hour of the summer transfer window in 2024 from Fortuna Dusseldorf.

It has proven to be an excellent addition to Daniel Farke’s side, with Tanaka quickly establishing himself as a pivotal member of the midfield engine room in the Championship-winning campaign.

The Japanese international quickly became a fan favourite at Elland Road thanks to his classy performances and penchant for crucial late goals.

Ao Tanaka age and height

Ao Tanaka was born on September 10, 1998, which makes him 27 years old as of October 2025 and in the peak of his career.

He stands at approximately 1.8 metres tall – or five feet and nine inches – which makes him roughly average height. Despite his stature, he is an all-action player who is comfortable with the physicality of English football.

Tanaka is a versatile midfielder who is capable of playing in deep or advanced roles through the middle of the pitch.

The 27-year-old has also shown an ability to play on the flanks if required, making him a useful option in the team.

Born in Kawasaki, Japan, Tanaka holds Japanese citizenship and has featured more than 30 times for the senior national team, scoring eight goals.

Tanaka’s career path

Tanaka has only had three clubs in his professional career, starting back in 2017.

The midfielder came through at his local side, Kawasaki Frontale, where he featured 94 times before moving on in 2021.

Tanaka initially had a loan spell with Fortuna Dusseldorf, where he impressed and secured a permanent switch the next summer.

In Germany, the Japanese midfielder played 95 times, with ten goals and eight assists to his name.

Ao Tanaka to Leeds United transfer saga

With just one year remaining on his deal with Fortuna Dusseldorf, Leeds looked to pounce on an opportunity to sign Tanaka in the summer of 2024.

Reports stated that a transfer fee has been agreed for Tanaka to join Leeds, while a medical was booked to get a deal over the line.

That fee was claimed to be in the region of £3.4million, while a contract until 2028 was eventually signed.
