‘The difference’… Enzo Maresca shares whether he thinks his Leicester City side are better than Leeds United

Enzo Maresca has shared his verdict on how big he thinks the gap is between his Leicester City side and the likes of Leeds United.

Leicester are currently on course to smash the Championship points record of 106 set by Reading in the 2005/06 season, having amassed an incredible 78 already after 32 matches.

The Foxes are 12 points clear of Leeds in second place, despite the fact the Whites, Southampton and Ipswich Town are all averaging more than two points per game. It is a standard never been seen before at this level.

Leeds, of course, were disadvantaged by such a chaotic summer window which had a knock-on effect to the start of their season, but the consistency Leicester have shown has been incredible.

Speaking in an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Maresca has acknowledged over the last 25 games that the gap between the three relegated sides has been very minimal.

Maresca says gap not much between Leicester and Leeds

He said: “All the statistics are good during the season but they can become great if you achieve the final target. Unfortunately we need some more wins. The trajectory and path is good and we have been first for 26 of the 32 games. That shows you the mentality of the players.

“Southampton and Leeds are doing fantastic. I’m sure that until the end Ipswich will also be fighting. We are still there. The difference between us, Southampton and Leeds over the last 25 games is not much.”

Leicester were very much able to get their ducks in line quicker than Leeds and Southampton in the summer. Key players James Maddison and Harvey Barnes were sold quickly, replacements were brought in.

Once Leeds and Southampton were able to build settled squads, though, the form of all three sides, as well as Ipswich, has been incredible. It was only on Tuesday that the Saints’ 22-match unbeaten run came to an end.

Maresca has already admitted that he thinks Leeds are the best counter-attacking team in the division and despite all this praise from the Leicester boss, it is them who are certainties for promotion.

As for Leeds and the other two teams, whoever misses out on promotion in May is going to be left feeling seriously disappointed given the incredible standard.
