‘Scratching his head’… BBC pundit thinks 28-year-old Leeds player could be about to get stuck on the bench

Archie Gray just continues to get better and better in that right-back position for Leeds United.

Gray was handed another start in that position last night as Leeds ran out comfortable 4-0 winners away at Swansea City thanks to goals from Crysencio Summerville, Joel Piroe and Willy Gnonto (2).

The 17-year-old actually managed to register himself an assist, as he provided a pinpoint pass in behind the Swansea defence for Gnonto to run onto and tuck into the bottom corner.

For a long time, Gray had felt like a stop-gap in that position but with each week that passes he just looks more and more comfortable, making it difficult for someone such as Connor Roberts to break into the starting XI.

Roberts was Leeds’ only signing in the January window as he made the move from Burnley in order to play more regular minutes. Pundit Jon Newsome told BBC Radio Leeds after the game, though, that Roberts will be scratching his head at how he gets into the team.

He said: “Just looking at Connor Roberts now doing some extra running with Mateo Joseph and he might be scratching his head thinking, ‘I was going to come to Leeds United to get some games under my belt, play in that push towards promotion.’ But he might be sat watching for a little bit.”

Roberts is just going to have to be patient at Leeds. There is no doubt he will get some starts over the coming week with Daniel Farke’s side facing a very hectic schedule.

Through the introduction of the likes of Ilia Gruev, Junior Firpo and Patrick Bamford, Farke has shown he is prepared to give fringe players a chance in the starting XI.

Roberts is clearly determined to prove himself at Elland Road and so when the time does come he just has to be ready to take it. It wouldn’t even be a surprise if it came on Saturday.

But at the same time, there is no doubt Gray deserves to keep his place for the time being with how good he has been, making it an extremely tough decision for Farke.
