‘Probably be disappointed’… Kieran McKenna makes claim about Leeds after Whites win again last night

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna has discussed the Championship’s automatic promotion race after his side, Leeds United and Leicester City all won again.

The Tractor Boys once again showed their late powers of recovery to come from 2-1 down to beat Bristol City 3-2, despite missing a penalty with the score level in the 87th minute.

Leeds, meanwhile, got back to winning ways with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Stoke City, having seen their run of nine consecutive league wins come to an end at Huddersfield Town on Saturday. Leicester City also ended their three-match losing run with a 1-0 win at Sunderland.

It has been mentioned so many times before this season, but the division’s top four sides are setting a pace which has never been seen at this level previously.

Leeds’ tally of 76 points after 36 games would have them sat comfortably in the top two in every other season, yet they are only in third this time around.

McKenna keeps focus amid crazy points tallies

Speaking on Sky Sports after last night’s match, Ipswich boss McKenna says it is imperative they continue ignoring what the other three teams do, as they would ‘probably be disappointed’ not to be well clear with the tally they have.

He said: “No, we don’t. We don’t mention other teams’ fixtures and that’s the best way because if we focused on other teams’ results, we’d probably be disappointed because with 78 points with 10 games to go, in a normal season, we’d probably be well clear at the top end of the table.”

It is incredible to think that Leeds have picked up 31 points from a possible 33 in 2024 and yet they still somehow aren’t in the automatic promotion places.

After a stumble over the festive period, Ipswich themselves have won six league games in a row and it is certainly all set for an incredible end to the campaign.

Leeds have refused to be drawn into speaking about the gap throughout the whole season and there is no reason for that to change now, as the business end approaches.
