Leeds United are set to focus on the retention of key players in the January transfer window rather than bringing in a host of new signings.
Leeds had a huge turnover of players in the summer following relegation as nine additions were made to make up for the 17 that departed.
Despite how threadbare Daniel Farke’s squad was looking at one stage in August, he is now blessed with some of the best squad depth in the league, with the likes of Luke Ayling, Charlie Cresswell and Joe Gelhardt regularly missing out on matchday squads altogether.
And according to Phil Hay of the Athletic, Leeds are not looking at dramatically adding to what they already have, but more so keeping those who have been crucial under Farke.
Of course, that is not to say Leeds will won’t do any business at all given there are still a couple of positions where Farke wanted additions in the summer, but didn’t get them.
Leeds must fight to retain key men
Crysencio Summerville is immediately one who springs to mind as to who Leeds simply must keep in January, though Premier League clubs are said to be interested.
Sky Sports pundit Tom Cairney believes Leeds may find it difficult to keep hold of him in January, having already scored eight goals, and provided six assists.
Georginio Rutter, Wilfried Gnonto and Archie Gray are among others who could attract top-level interest and big money offers.
In terms of incomings, attacking midfield and left-back are arguably the two positions which could do with addressing the most, if Leeds enter the market.
Junior Firpo has been linked with an Elland Road departure next month and so if he is to leave, it is imperative that Leeds replace him in order to ease the load on Sam Byram.
