Junior Firpo has a ‘high chance’ of leaving Leeds United in January, according to journalist Dean Jones.
Firpo has been linked with a move back to his former side Real Betis when the window re-opens next month, with the Spanish side said to be keen on a loan with an option-to-buy.
And speaking to Give Me Sport, transfer insider Jones believes Leeds will look to cash in if they receive a suitable offer for the 27-year-old amid interest from Betis.
He said: “There is a pretty high chance that Firpo will leave Leeds in January if they can get a good offer for him. If he has had his head turned by the idea of going back to Betis, I think it’s understandable if they look to cash in.
“I thought it was a good transfer when he first joined Leeds, to be honest, but that was more based on what I had previously seen at Betis than Barcelona. It hasn’t worked out as well as expected. There’s no denying that.”
Leeds should sanction Firpo exit
The 27-year-old has spent much of the season on the treatment table and after just three matches back, is there again after picking up a hamstring injury in the win over Swansea City last week.
Unfortunately, he just cannot be relied on to stay fit and with Sam Byram’s injury record over the last few years, Leeds need someone reliable who can provide cover and competition.
Reports from Spain have suggested that Firpo is keen to leave Elland Road in January, despite having discussed his reason for staying in the summer in a recent interview.
It is likely he would’ve left after relegation had he not spent so long out injured, but given that he is set to return before the window re-opens, that may not be such a problem this time.
If Leeds do receive an offer, they should definitely let him go and look to bring in a replacement who will be an upgrade both in terms of availability, and ability.
