Phil Hay says Daniel Farke ‘made sure’ Leeds kept ‘outstanding’ player this summer, despite huge £20m bid

Daniel Farke made sure Leeds United did not sell Crysencio Summerville in the summer.

That is according to Phil Hay of the Athletic, who reported this morning Summerville, Illan Meslier and Pascal Struijk were all considered as players Leeds could potentially sell at the beginning of the window.

However, that changed as soon as Farke was appointed as Leeds‘ new manager in July, with all three ‘moved off the list of prospective exits’.

Summerville was the subject of interest from several Premier League clubs with Crystal Palace, Everton and Burnley all reportedly interested in the Dutchman.

As per Fabrizio Romano, in the final 48 hours of the window, Burnley saw a huge £20 million offer knocked back by Leeds for Summerville.

Leeds’ wingers were always going to be the subject of interest in the summer with Luis Sinisterra, Jack Harrison, Willy Gnonto and Summerville all high-value assets.

In the end, only Sinisterra and Harrison departed Elland Road on loan, with big money bids for both Summerville and Gnonto turned down by San Francisco 49ers Enterprises.

It is difficult to know why Summerville was considered as someone who should be sold earlier in the window, with his age and contract status ensuring Leeds were always in a good position to keep him.

Thankfully Farke was someone who recognised his talent straight away, and it is a decision that has paid off so far, as he looks a cut above this level.

Summerville – who Leigh Bromby hailed as ‘outstanding’ at the weekend – has scored two goals and provided two assists so far this season, and there is no doubt both of those numbers will increase between now and May.
