Phil Hay has told The Square Ball podcast that Burnley have given Leeds United no indication that they would enter talks over a deal for defender Charlie Taylor – despite being approached by The 49ers.
Taylor, 29, joined Burnley six years ago from Leeds and up until the club’s relegation from the Premier League in 2022, he was first choice. He is just nine games shy of clocking up 200 games for the Clarets.
But last season, he fell down the pecking order under Vincent Kompany – starting just 36 games of a possible 54. Now, he has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Turf Moor. He may want a move.
Indeed, the £27k-a-week ace has not been involved for either of Burnley’s two league games so far. But, he did play the entire match in the Carabao Cup at Nottingham Forest on Wednesday – a 1-0 away win.
Phil Hay told The Square Ball earlier this summer that Leeds would like to sign Taylor. Now, on the same outlet, Hay spoke about the chances of Leeds signing him; Burnley have not been interested in a sale.
“Despite what they’ve tried, Burnley have not shown any inkling or intention of letting him go. This is the part of the window where things change rapidly. Players themselves think, ‘I’m not playing, I need to go’.”

Leeds need a left-back. Hay has also reported that Hjelde is likely to go before Friday’s deadline, while Sam Byram remains injured until after the international break. Junior Firpo is also still out with an injury.
Taylor would be a brilliant signing for us. A player that knows the club, one with know how in both the Championship and Premier League. He knows how to win this division. Burnley are keen to keep him.
