Chris Wilder says Leeds player Jayden Bogle has something his Sheffield United signing doesn’t

Jayden Bogle has endured a difficult start to life at Leeds United following his move from Sheffield United in the summer, but Chris Wilder says his replacement lacks something Bogle has.

Bogle ended a four-year stint at Sheffield United in the summer when he opted to leave Bramall Lane for Elland Road. He clocked up 103 outings for The Blades during that time, having a hand in 16 goals.

That included three Premier League goals last season against both Manchester clubs and Chelsea. For just £5m, Leeds felt they had a bargain in Bogle. He would have cost more if his deal was not expiring in 2025.

But Bogle has struggled since joining Leeds. Conceding a penalty against Portsmouth, a rash yellow at West Brom, “all over the place” at Sheffield Wednesday according to Andy Hinchcliffe and then Saturday.

Wilder says Alfie Gilchrist lacks Bogle’s attacking qualities

Bogle was criticised by Tony Dorigo for failing to close down Burnley star Luca Koleosho earlier than he did, as the Belgian raced into the Leeds half and eventually scored for Scott Parker’s side in a 1-0 win.

However, Chris Wilder compared his new signing Alfie Gilchrist to the man he has replaced at Sheffield United in Bogle. Leeds were actually linked with Chelsea’s Gilchrist before he joined Wilder’s Blades.

“Alfie is good when he’s backing up Brooksy [David] or Jes [Rak-Sakyi], and he can play right of a three. He’s not a Jayden Bogle, he won’t be in the other area eight times out of 10,” Wilder told The Star.

“But you’ve seen his defensive qualities. He’s quick, he’s a good defender. He was a big signing for us and he’s going to enjoy it. He is enjoying it at the minute and he’ll get better, as the team will,” Wilder added.

Neil Redfearn has doubts about new Leeds signing Bogle

Even after the 2-0 win over Hull City, a game which saw Leeds pick up a second successive Championship win and keep a third clean sheet in a row, former Leeds boss Redfearn wasn’t overly impressed by Bogle.

Redfearn described Bogle both with and without the ball as “hit and miss”, and even said that the £5m man is beaten too easily by opposing wingers. Something which Leeds fans are starting to notice.

“A steady eddie. He doesn’t set anything alight if I’m honest. At times he gets done on the wrong side, his distances. That can be down to his centre-back, they organise you. His in-possession stuff is hit and miss.”
