Georginio Rutter admits what he really thinks about playing for Leeds in the Premier League

Georginio Rutter has yet to show why Brighton splashed a club-record fee of £40m to sign him from Leeds United in the summer, but did make his first start on the weekend.

Just the 22-year-old’s second career start in the Premier League. His first came for Leedsafter The Whites signed him for a club-record £35m, starting at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea under boss Javi Gracia.

Rutter struggled in his first six months after joining Leeds. A young player, unable to speak English in a new league with Leeds struggling and having to work under four managers in the space of six months.

Sam Allardyce recently said that Rutter was simply “not good enough” to play during his spell as Leeds boss in 2022-23, which was just four games. But in the Championship, Rutter came alive for Leeds.

Rutter has annoyed Leeds fans since joining Brighton

A fan favourite at Elland Road before he left, Rutter’s exit was forced as Brighton activated his release clause. Prior to the £40m deal, Leeds had rejected £29m and £35m offers from Brighton for Rutter.

Following his move to Brighton, Rutter annoyed Leeds fans by typing “Don’t go to bed just yet” and that being published on Brighton’s social media. Now, he has said initially, Leeds was not his “best moment”.

“With Leeds, the Premier League was different. I didn’t play a lot. Maybe it wasn’t a good moment for me. Now it’s different. We have a good team and good atmosphere,” Rutter told BBC Radio Sussex.

How Rutter and Crysencio Summerville are faring after Leeds exit

Crysencio Summerville has managed just one start for West Ham and it did not come in the Premier League, but instead in the Carabao Cup. Summerville is yet to score or lay on an assist for the Hammers.

Similarly, Rutter has only started once for Fabian Hurtzeler’s Brighton though it came against Ipswich on Saturday. A 0-0 draw, Rutter lasted 67 minutes against Kalvin Phillips, Leif Davis and Jack Clarke’s side.

Both will be expected to improve greatly between now and the end of the season if they are to prove their enormous transfer fees. Leeds raked in £65m for the duo, possibly rising to £74m with add-ons.
