Leeds United legend Nigel Martyn says he saw something in the games against Chelsea and Liverpool that reminded him of the famous 2000 win at Elland Road.
Elland Road has seen countless famous games over the years, and the two classic Premier League encounters against Chelsea and Liverpool will live long in the memory.
Leeds last beat Liverpool in the year 2000, when Mark Viduka scored all four goals. Although they could not equal that feat, their 3-3 draw against Arne Slot’s side felt equally significant.
The 2000 win over Liverpool came in the same year that Lee Bowyer scored his famous goal to secure a last-minute Champions League win over AC Milan on another famous night at Elland Road.
Now, Leeds’ former goalkeeper Nigel Martyn has said that the atmosphere in the games against Chelsea and Liverpool was close to the rainy night when Leeds secured a historic European night.

Nigel Martyn says Leeds United atmosphere was similar to AC Milan win
Speaking to LUTV after Leeds’ draw against Liverpool, Martyn claimed that the noise generated by the Elland Road crowd when Bowyer scored against Milan was the “loudest noise” he experienced in his career.
However, having witnessed Leeds’ win over Chelsea and draw against Arne Slot’s Liverpool, Martyn admitted that the atmosphere at those two games came close to matching that noise.
Asked about the importance of the atmosphere at Elland Road, Martyn said: “We shouldn’t take that for granted.
“I can remember Lee Bowyer scoring a very, very late goal against AC Milan here, and I think that was the loudest noise I’ve ever heard on a football pitch. The place just erupted and, you know, it’s been doing that sort of Wednesday night and tonight again.
“You can’t underestimate how important that support really is because it drives you on at times when you’re not feeling great, and it makes people run further than they would want to run naturally.”

Leeds United’s home points tally has already matched Southampton last season
Leeds’ home form was always expected to be crucial to their Premier League survival hopes this season, and that is proving to be the case.
After eight games so far this season, Leeds have already taken 12 points, with three wins, three draws and two defeats.

In doing so, Leeds have matched the points total that Southampton managed in the entire 2024/25 season, as they suffered an immediate relegation back to the Championship.
Leeds’ home form will undoubtedly stand them in good stead in their survival hunt. However, Daniel Farke will need to find a way to pick up more points away from home to supplement their points tally.
