It appears as though Leeds United are closing in on a deal to sign Sean Longstaff from Newcastle United, in what’s been a transfer deal long in the making at Elland Road.

Sean Longstaff‘s links to Leeds United go back as far as last year. In March 2024 even, Leeds United were linked with a move for Longstaff, then again in the last January transfer window, and again coming into this summer.

The latest comes from Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie. He’s revealed on X that Leeds are close to agreeing a deal for Longstaff, having tabled a £12million bid to sign the 27-year-old who featured 25 times in the Premier League last season.

What Newcastle United fans are saying about Sean Longstaff to Leeds United

Out of contract in 2026 and having started just eight games in the Premier League last season, it makes sense for Longstaff to leave the club this summer, and it makes sense that he moves to Elland Road where he’s clearly wanted by Daniel Farke and where he’ll get plenty of game time.

And Magpies fans have all given Longstaff warm wishes ahead of his exit. One comment read: “I know the time is right and this makes sense for everyone, but I’ll be sad to see Sean Longstaff go. He’s made such an important contribution to post-takeover.”

Another Newcastle United fan wrote: “He’ll always be remembered fondly, Geordie lad who lived his dream, achieved Champions League twice and ended the trophy drought.”

Having starred in some huge European games for Newcastle, fans have fond memories of the academy graduate: “There was a time not so long ago when he was absolutely pivotal. His efforts and contributions, whilst they’ve admittedly dwindled since, cannot be understated. Importantly part of the squad that brought silverware back to St James’ Park, a club legend in that regard.”

This fan added: “I’d far rather see Longstaff playing regularly for a team like Leeds where the fans will appreciate his level of hard graft than watch him be our sixth-choice midfielder sat on the bench all season. He deserves game time and is definitely a Premier League level player.”

Sean Longstaff’s stats at Newcastle United say it all

In 214 total appearances for his hometown team, Longstaff has scored 16 goals and assisted 11.

He’s had spells of injury and spells where he’s been out of favour. But he’s been a great servant on the whole and he’s helped the club achieve some huge success in the last few years, giving fans some great memories on the European stage.

Longstaff scored and starred in the club’s 4-1 win over PSG in the Champions League in 2023 which is one memory that Newcastle United fans online seem to cherish, having also helped the club win the Carabao Cup last time round.

Leeds United aim to be in Europe within five years and so having a player like Longstaff who’s competed at that level can only aid their ambitions. And Longstaff signing keeps Farke’s summer haul going, with Leeds United having signed three new players so far this summer.

For Leeds United, Longstaff will add definite Premier League quality and experience, and in a position that’s really light on numbers ahead of the new season. Overall this seems like a solid signing.
