Dan James and Wales suffered a 2-0 defeat in Turkey after going down to 10 men on Monday in their latest 2024 European qualifier – and Welsh media have given their verdict on the Leeds United star’s display, lasting 84 minutes.

James, 25, is back at Leeds after a frustrating loan spell at Fulham. Joining the London side last year, the £25m man was looking to increase his game time in order to keep him fresh for the World Cup. He managed just 23 outings.

Now back at Elland Road, it looks as if James is going to be pulling on a Leeds shirt next season – with his current deal still having three years left to run. He could be an incredibly useful asset in the Championship, next season.

But on Monday, it was not his night. Wales went to Samsunspor’s Stadium, hoping for a result against an improving Turkey side. They failed to do so, but held on until the last 20 minutes. Jacob Morrell was sent off on 41 minutes.

It left James pretty isolated. Turkey had two goals ruled out and missed a penalty before they opening the scoring. On 72 minutes, Umut Nayir scored, followed by a second from Arda Guler. Wales Online commented on James.

“Drew an early yellow card from Celik and his free-kick was close to sneaking in the far corner. Blew a bit hot and cold. Went up top at half-time and ran tirelessly. Subbed,” Wales Online reported, handing James a rating of 6/10.

Always going to be a tricky night for Wales and James, especially after Morrell’s red. It leaves their chances of a top-two spot in European qualifying in tatters. After four games, they have just four points, sitting in fourth of five.

It will be interesting to see what happens with James this summer. His manager, Rob Page, has been outspoken in saying that he is a Premier League player and top-tier managers should make a move. But he could end up staying.
