Last summer saw the end of an era for many crucial parts of Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United side, leaving the club as Daniel Farke placed his stamp on the Elland Road squad.
Luke Ayling went to Middlesbrough, Liam Cooper joined CSKA Sofia and Stuart Dallas retired due to the long-term knee injury that had prevented him from kicking a ball since April 2021. The end of an era.
Of Bielsa’s reign, only a few faces remain. Illan Meslier, Pascal Struijk, Junior Firpo, Dan James and Patrick Bamford are still at Elland Road, having played major roles during Bielsa’s spell as Leeds United manager.
A year prior to those trio leaving, another of Bielsa’s core left the club. Adam Forshaw was offered a new deal by Leeds following relegation after initially being told he could remain to train during pre-season.

Adam Forshaw scores first goal in nine years after 2023 Leeds exit
But Forshaw chose to leave Leeds, after an injury-ravaged five-and-a-half-year spell that saw him manage just 91 appearances for the club. He initially joined Norwich, where the injury issues continued.
After just nine games, he moved to Plymouth Argyle where Forshaw seemed to recover his fitness and clocked up 30 appearances over the next 12 months. In January, the midfielder joined Blackburn Rovers.
He has since played nine times for Blackburn and on Saturday, he scored his first goal since netting for Middlesbrough in April 2016. The first in a 2-0 Blackburn win over the team he left for Ewood Park.
Adam Forshaw has managed just 15 goals throughout his career
Incredibly, Forshaw did not actually score a single goal during his time at Elland Road. He came close with an effort against Wigan for Leeds, typically one of the sides Forshaw has actually scored for in his career.
| Clubs | Games | Goals | Assists |
| Everton | 2 | 0 | 0 |
| Brentford | 100 | 11 | 12 |
| Wigan | 17 | 1 | 1 |
| Middlesbrough | 103 | 2 | 3 |
| Leeds | 91 | 0 | 3 |
| Norwich | 9 | 0 | 0 |
| Plymouth | 30 | 0 | 2 |
| Blackburn | 9 | 1 | 0 |
Blackburn currently sit in fifth place in the Championship table despite the loss of Daniel Farke’s nemesis John Eustace to Derby County, and Forshaw will be doing everything he can to help Blackburn stay there.
