Michael Beale has taken over at Sunderland as the Wearside club’s new boss after his Rangers exit, and he should reignite prior interest in Leeds United duo Charlie Cresswell and Jamie Shackleton.
Beale initially impressed at Rangers, after a successful first stint in management with QPR. But, after a poor start to 2023-24, he was relieved of his duties. It is a move that has benefitted the Scottish side.
Philippe Clement has come in and impressed in the dugout, winning the League Cup on the weekend. In the mean time, Beale has replaced Tony Mowbray at Sunderland. Already, his third managerial spell.
A Sunderland side that also boasts ex-Leeds stars Niall Huggins and Jack Clarke. He is likely to enter January in order to bring in some of his own signings, before a push for the Championship play-offs.

Two players that Beale wanted during his time as Rangers gaffer, are currently on the books at Leeds – and two players that could be available next month. Cresswell is struggling for game time at Elland Road.
Michael Beale wanted Leeds duo; Should lure them to Sunderland
Shackleton is a bit more involved, but is about to enter the last six months of his contract at Leeds. He is unlikely to win a new deal, whether Leeds are in the Championship, or the Premier League, next term.
Rangers were keen on a move for Shackleton in the summer. Sunderland would not be able to get him on a free until May – but if Beale was to reignite his previous interest, he could get him for a bargain fee.
With Leeds unlikely to offer a new deal, the club may think it is best to sell him for a fee – instead of letting him go for nothing next summer. That may tempt Beale and Sunderland to make a January move.

Cresswell has already been linked with Southampton and Middlesbrough on loan. Another that Beale was linked with at Rangers. If Sunderland want a centre-back, surely he will be on Beale’s January list.
So, there is a chance that Beale could reignite his Rangers interest in the two Leeds players and if he does decide to make a move – he will surely find some success, given both are struggling to play.
