Manager who was blocked from joining Leeds United now ‘high’ in Tottenham’s list to replace Ange Postecoglou

Leeds United will be thrilled with Daniel Farke’s appointment if they get promoted, but someone else could’ve taken them to the next level.

As another season winds down, the hope is that the Whites will be back in the top flight next season, as a bottle from this point in the Championship would see uproar.

The Leeds boss deserves his credit, especially after fans saw Farke on his last chance in an extraordinary turnaround.

With this likely to be the season they go up, obviously it could’ve been secured had Leeds not bottled promotion last year, and someone they looked at before Farke could’ve made that happen.

Now he’s in high demand and looks set to be the potential successor of Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham.

Former Leeds target Andoni Iraola ‘high’ on Tottenham’s radar

With Andoni Iraola flying high with his Bournemouth side at the moment, he could’ve actually been Leeds’ manager.

During the 22/23 season, following the sacking of Jesse Marsch, Leeds weighed up their options for their next head coach.

Iraola as now know is a manager with a very ceiling and was showing promising signs over at Rayo Vallecano.

This of course, grasped Leeds’ interest, but a move for the Spaniard to Yorkshire never came to an occurrence as Vallecano ‘blocked’ Leeds from approaching the now Bournemouth boss (BBC Sport).

A real shame as now Iraola could be set to replace Ange Postecoglou at Spurs as the Cherries boss is ‘high’ on Tottenham’s list, according to TEAMtalk.

Angus Kinnear on why Iraola changed his mind over the Leeds job

Eventually, the Whites hierarchy did get through to the Spaniard as promising progress was being made.

Progress that was going well until Iraola decided joining Leeds was the wrong timing.

For him, this clearly worked out with the Tottenham links now, but who knows where Leeds would be had Iraola made the switch to Yorkshire.

Angus Kinnear, who himself will be leaving the club, talked to The Square Ball in 2023 about why Iraola changed his mind on replacing Marsch.

“The people identified at that stage, should it be decided Jesse shouldn’t continue, were Iraola, (Arne) Slot, and Raul,” Kinnear said.

“Raul told us he wasn’t prepared to come to Leeds at that point. Iraola and Slot both told us they would be prepared to come to Leeds and would be made available.

“Then when the process started, it obviously happens quite quickly, Iraola decided that he wasn’t prepared to come anymore, even though he had an exit clause.”

Although Farke is proving his worth at the club, Leeds’ Premier League project could’ve started much sooner under Iraola.

However, it just didn’t add up and despite Leeds’ misfortunes on missing out, the hope is that Farke can help the Whites to a bright future.
