It might not have been the most-polished performance of the season, but Leeds United got the job done late on against promotion rivals Sheffield United on Monday night.
A second successive Monday night outing saw Leeds take on Chris Wilder’s side in a first-against-second clash at Bramall Lane. Leeds came into it having produced a stunning comeback against Sunderland.
But during the hours before kick-off, it was confirmed that Leeds would be without Ethan Ampadu after he sustained another knee injury. This one is expected to require surgery, having avoided it last time.
Despite the loss of Ampadu and Leeds going behind to an own goal from Illan Meslier, the Whites got the win. A win that saw Junior Firpo, Ao Tanaka and Joel Piroe all find themselves on the score sheet.

Junior Firpo posts on Instagram as Leeds beat Sheffield United
Plenty of Leeds players starred on the day. Manor Solomon had Harry Clarke on toast, Piroe took his tally to 15 goals for the season – already eclipsing last season’s total, and the Leeds defence were excellent.
But by far and away, Firpo was Leeds’ best player. The defender’s long-term future remains a question mark with Fabrizio Romano confirming Firpo has changed agents, but it is not affecting his on-pitch form.
The former Barcelona man clocked up his 50th Championship outing including the play-offs on Monday and in that time, he has had a hand in 18 goals. He posted on Instagram: “What a team!”
Luke Ayling and Leif Davis join Leeds players in praising Firpo
Not only did Firpo arrive to equalise from left-back for Leeds, but the £13m man flicked on Joe Rothwell’s corner to find Tanaka at the back post. The Japan star did the rest, putting Leeds 2-1 ahead late on.
Clearly, former Leeds players were watching on including another left-back recently on Leeds’ books. Leif Davis is starring in a struggling Ipswich side in the Premier League, describing Firpo as a “serious player”.

Others also commented, including Luke Ayling who posted “FIRPO!” as did Leeds teammates Pascal Struijk and Largie Ramazani, both praising the Leeds’ left-back. If he wants a new deal, he is earning it.
