Leeds want 22-year-old free agent that has been compared to Dutch icon Edgar Davids

Leeds United are reportedly plotting a move to sign Han-Noah Massengo after his contract at Bristol City came to an end this summer – and he is a player that was compared to legendary footballer Edgar Davids during 2022-23.

Massengo, 22, joined Bristol City in the summer of 2019 for a fee of £7m. It came after breaking into Monaco’s first team. He impressed at Ashton Gate, clocking up 110 outings for the Robins. Last summer, he joined Auxerre on loan.

From January, until the summer – playing 15 times. Now, he returns to Bristol City where he finds his contract is set to come to an end. Bristol City will be due a compensation fee, but nothing like the £7m they paid four years ago.

Phil Hay has reported on The Athletic that Leeds are interested in Massengo, and will have to pay a compensation fee as he is below the age of 23. He certainly caught the eye during his time in Ligue 1 last season, with Auxerre.

Indeed, ex-PSG and West Ham man Edouard Cisse told Amazon Prime, after Massengo helped Auxerre secure a shock win over Lyon in february, that the young Frenchman reminds him of the way Dutch icon Davids used to play.

“I didn’t know him (before) but saw him on Friday. Very impressive, eye-catching. He made a lot of good tackles. He is tough. In duels he is forceful and not afraid to show himself in midfield. He reminds me a bit of Edgar Davids.”

Leeds are going to be lacking in midfield this summer. Adam Forshaw, Tyler Adams and Marc Roca could all follow Weston McKennie out of the door. Hay reports that Forshaw has an offer on the table from Leeds, but is yet to sign.

So, midfield additions are needed. Massengo is talented, still young and has impressive form in the Championship. He gives Leeds a bit of energy in the middle, and available for a compensation fee. He would be a wonderful signing.

If Leeds do sign him, the Whites will be hoping he is a bit more like the Davids that sparkled at Juventus, Tottenham and with his country. Not the Davids that ended his career in England’s League Two, with Barnet as player manager.
