Leeds United transfer hint as ‘hopeful’ Daniel Farke discusses how many signings he plans to make

To say that Daniel Farke flat-out ‘failed’ in his previous Premier League stints with Norwich City is to miss much of the context surrounding the Leeds United boss’s time at Carrow Road.

Yes, The Canaries finished rock bottom on Daniel Farke’s watch during the 2019/20 season.

However, Norwich backed Farke with only £11 million in the previous summer window. Sam Byram, the full-back now reunited with his old Carrow Road boss at Elland Road, was the most expensive of those up-front investments.

Farke still managed to mastermind a famous win over Manchester City, however. Norwich also secured a draw with Arsenal while running the likes of Tottenham and runaway champions Liverpool close, losing against the latter duo by the odd goal.

Half a decade on, Farke now admits that survival – with a Norwich side operating on a mere shred of a shoestring – would have been nothing short of a ‘miracle’.

The Leeds United bosses look set to back their manager rather than sack him now, despite claims that Farke’s job at Elland Road was under threat just days after promotion was secured.

And, while insisting that his relationship with the board remains ‘really trustful and really good’, Farke also spoke about the importance of getting recruitment right as he looks to avoid a repeat of that what looked, in hindsight, like a pretty hopeless campaign in East Anglia.

Daniel Farke hoping for ‘many’ new signings at Leeds United

While the size of their summer budget remains a mystery at present, former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan feels Leeds must spend £50 million minimum if they are to avoid suffering the same fate which befell Ipswich Town, Southampton and Leicester City this term.

Given that the Premier League’s bottom three invested over £300 million on new signings between them in the off-season, it is clear that heavy spending is no guarantee of on-field success.

Hence why Farke highlights the importance of not only ambition in the market, but also on sensible, considered additions.

“Everything has to be spot on with the decision-making in order to stay up in the first season. Not only in the first season, but to make sure you stay for good and make an established Premier League side,” Farke explains.

“You have to be ambitious. You have to have a proper budget. We are working pretty, pretty hard to have a proper budget and you have to make sure you improve in each department.”

Farke says Leeds also plan to invest in the training ground, on contract extensions and also their iconic Elland Road arena. San Francisco 49ers chief Paraag Marathe wants to increase Elland Road’s capacity to 53,000 in the coming years.

“We have to invest also in improving stuff,” Farke adds, all the while promising that Leeds will make more than ‘just one or two’ new signings. “The most important thing is also to invest in the playing squad.

“Of course, there will also be hopefully many new incomings with quality. [You must] find the right players to improve you. It’s not just one simple target where you just sign one or two players and that’s it.

“It will be a complicated and hardworking period, to give this club the best opportunity to achieve what we want to achieve. Many discussions are needed and we’re trying to work pretty hard on it.

“Right now, it’s important we have a clear budget and it’s clear what we can spend.”

Farke planning to learn from Norwich City failures at Elland Road

Leeds have been linked with £20m-rated Evann Guessand of Nice. One of the most exciting young strikers in French football. Krasnodar captain Edouard Spertsyan is keen on playing Premier League football at Elland Road, meanwhile.

Others to be mentioned in the media include Ukraine international centre-forward Vladyslav Vanat, Norwich City hitman Josh Sargent, and Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

“We have to take some decisions in terms of contracts, new incomings,” Farke adds, desperate to get his squad shipshape well in advance of deadline day. “We need a squad who is competitive on Premier League level.

“It has to be spot on to give yourself a chance. You need a strong start to add as many points as quickly as possible. We need new signings relatively quickly, not the end of August. We have had good conversations so far.

“I know what we need to have in order to survive by the experience that I didn’t have at Norwich.

“You can read how much they [Ipswich, Leicester and Southampton] have spent. An unbelievable amount. I think about my time at Norwich. We had nearly a miracle because we had more points than all the clubs who were promoted last season had by spending way more [than us].

“When you have a proper team, proper resources, proper backing and proper opportunities to be successful, it’s more likely that you do this. This is the most important thing. We have to work on giving ourselves a chance.

“Having proper funds and a proper budget but also to do something sensible with the budget. To bring the right players in and have a competitive squad. This is what we want to do.”
