Huddersfield Town went down to 10 men on Saturday but there was plenty of criticism from Leeds United fans after the match that Huddersfield had not been reduced to nine – and Chris Foy agrees.
Jonathan Hogg was sent off for a second yellow when he elbowed Junior Firpo during an aerial duel. The way the veteran midfielder had started the game, meant it was no surprise when he was shown red.
Leeds forced their way back into the game after the red. Michal Helik – who thinks Leeds will finish in the top two come the end of the campaign – scored for them, but Patrick Bamford netted in the second 45.
Leeds could not take advantage of the extra player despite Huddersfield being a side embroiled in the lower depths of the Championship and at risk of relegation. They were incredibly robust throughout.
Indeed, fans could not believe that Terriers defender Jack Pearson had not been shown a red card in the first half for rolling his studs down the back of Cree Summerville’s calf. Chris Foy spoke to Sky Sports.
“The challenge has no prospect of playing the ball and results in a high point of contact with sufficient force to endanger the safety of the opponent and, in my view, he is very fortunate to escape a red card.
“There there isn’t a great deal of speed, but the high point of contact, degree of force in the challenge, means it endangers the safety of the player and a red card for serious foul play would be appropriate.”

Jon Newsome described the tackle after the match as “horrendous” and also believed it should be a straight red card. But, that is the way it goes in the Championship, with no VAR. It can go unpunished.
Leeds have had a fair few go against them this season, and while it was down to the Leeds players in failing to get a second goal – playing against nine men would have surely seen Leeds win all three points.
