It is fair to say Huddersfield Town were not afraid to stick their foot in against Leeds United today.
The Terriers were able to prevent Leeds from making it 10 league wins in a row as they held their West Yorkshire neighbours to a 1-1 draw, despite being down to 10 men for over half a game.
Michal Helik had given Huddersfield the lead just minutes before Jonathan Hogg’s red card, with Patrick Bamford then equalising in the second half to earn Leeds a point.
Huddersfield can consider themselves a little fortunate that they were not reduced to 10 men earlier in the first half, though, when Matthew Pearson sent a raking challenge down the back of Crysencio Summerville’s calves.
Speaking on BBC Radio Leeds after the match, pundit Jon Newsome labelled it as a ‘horrendous’ challenge and was left baffled at some of the reactions by Huddersfield fans.
Newsome baffled by first half decision
He said: “Some of these away [Huddersfield] fans, I don’t understand what game they watch. I really don’t. They are screaming and shouting for stuff, booing Summerville.
“If you watch the tackle from Pearson, blimey, it is horrendous and a straight red card. Yet they are booing for Summerville and the referee, and it just makes you like, ‘give your head’s a wobble’. Let’s see it for what it is, come on.”
To say Huddersfield were putting in some strong challenges was an understatement but that is unfortunately the treatment Summerville has been getting all season.
Daniel Farke has been having to manage his training load carefully over the last few weeks as a result of a number of little injuries he has been picking up in matches.
It is no surprise that Summerville’s form has dropped of as of late with the sheer number of bad fouls he is on the receiving end of every week.
