The Leeds United rivalry with Frank Lampard returned to the stage on Wednesday night. Now Coventry City manager, it was an eventful night for Lampard.

On another convincing outing for the Leeds United, they beat Coventry City 2-0 courtesy of first half goals from Joel Piroe and Jayden Bogle, opening up a five point lead at the top of the Championship table in the process.

Daniel Farke’s side are going from strength to strength in the Championship. Despite going through the January transfer window without a first-team signing, the Whites are looking formidable, and ruthless in attack with nine goals in their last two games.

On Wednesday night, Leeds United fans were heard chanting at Lampard whose previous Derby County side had needle with Leeds over the spygate saga of 2019.

Lampard cupped his ears as the Whites faithful chanted ‘Stop crying, Frank Lampard’, in the away end at the CBS Arena. He replaced Mark Robins in November and has won 50% of his 14 games in charge since.

Joining in the banter is Leeds United’s official X account. Still buzzing from the win on Wednesday night, Leeds posted on Thursday morning: “No, but seriously, how good was last night!”

For anyone unaware of the joke, Lampard amuses football fans with his habit of laughing and joking, but then changing the tone to a more serious one, often using the words ‘no, but seriously’ in doing so.

Leeds’ win at Coventry takes their unbeaten streak to 14 games in all competitions. The last time Leeds United lost a game was two days after Lampard’s Coventry appointment, losing against Blackburn Rovers on November 30th.

What Frank Lampard said about Leeds United after Coventry defeat

Putting the past and the jokes aside, Lampard was full of praise for Leeds United after the match on Wednesday night.

He said after the game: “They’re a really good team and they’re top of the league for a reason. They have a lot of threats, and we knew that. They’re a good team and there are things we could’ve done better that’s for sure.”

Leeds are now five points ahead of Burnley in 2nd and Sheffield United in 3rd. The Whites have won four of their opening seven Championship games of 2025, drawing the other three.

Up next for the Whites is a home game against Millwall in the FA Cup on Saturday.
