A legendary Leeds United figure has admitted that he is open to a return to Rangers after the 49ers Enterprises parted company with Russell Martin.

Former Southampton manager Martin has endured a torrid time at Ibrox, leaving Rangers languishing in seventh place in the Scottish Premiership, with one win from his opening seven games.

Leeds boss Daniel Farke will be relieved by reports that the 49ers have no plans to change manager at Elland Road, as the Whites have enjoyed a strong return to the Premier League, collecting eight points from seven games so far this season.

Now, a former Leeds icon has admitted that he is open to returning to Ibrox to reunite with former head coach Steven Gerrard, after Martin’s time at the club came to an end.

Gary McAllister is open to a Rangers return

Gary McAllister established himself as a legendary figure at Leeds during his playing career, as he formed part of the midfield that steered the club to its most recent league title.

Now, McAllister could be set to return to Rangers as an assistant coach, having previously managed the Whites, as reports suggest the 49ers could bring Gerrard back to Ibrox.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, McAllister said: “Well, the thing is, we had a wonderful time there. We really enjoyed our time there, and Stephen did an amazing job getting that 55th title.

“There have been three or four managerial changes since we left, and he’s always going to be linked with Glasgow Rangers. He loved his time up there.

“I don’t know, he’s obviously been out of the game for about six or seven months now, so you never know what can happen,” Asked if he would say yes to reuniting with Gerrard if asked, McAllister concluded: It’s a big question that. You never say never, do you?”

Former Leeds United boss has been out of work for several years

Having previously managed both Coventry City and Leeds, McAllister became a specialist assistant coach, working in several high-profile roles.

McAllister spent time at Middlesbrough assisting his former Leeds teammate Gordon Strachan, before moving to Aston Villa to work under Gerard Houllier.

He moved to Liverpool in 2015, working alongside Brendan Rodgers before linking up with Gerrard at Rangers and Aston Villa.

McAllister has been out of work since October 2022 but could be set for an imminent return following Russell’s departure.
