Leeds United insiders don’t think 23-year-old can save his career at Elland Road now

Brenden Aaronson is currently one of 11 players out on loan from Leeds United.

Aaronson made use of the loan clause that became active in his contract after relegation as he joined Union Berlin for the season, in a deal that did not include an option-to-buy.

However, according to Phil Hay in his latest Athletic piece, people at Leeds do not expect Aaronson to be able to salvage his career at Elland Road, with his form at club level continuing to be poor.

Aaronson said in an interview last week that he does not believe his career at Leeds is over just yet, claiming he still loves the club despite how much he struggled last season.

But that is clearly not the view that Leeds are taking, even if their plan of sending him out on loan to increase his value to put them in a better position to sell next summer, has backfired.

Aaronson has struggled severely since moving to Union in the summer and is still yet to register a single goal or assist for the club. In fact, his last goal at club level was all the way back in August last year.

The 23-year-old has repeatedly come in for criticism from the German media for his performances, with his lack of physicality again cited as a reason for his struggles.

Leeds spent £25 million to sign him from Red Bull Salzburg in the summer of 2022, and it may be that the club have to accept the fact they are going to make a loss on him.

Despite still being young, and with three years left on his deal, there is still time for Aaronson to improve, but he has just shown no signs of him ever being a £25 million player.

On reflection, this has been an extremely disappointing investment by Leeds but you would hope under this new regime, that it is a recruitment mistake that won’t happen again.
