Leeds United boss Daniel Farke spoke about Junior Firpo’s contract situation on Friday, prompting a lot of debate over the full-back’s future at the club.

Leeds United paid Barcelona little under £12million for Junior Firpo in 2021, with the left-back having been something of a talking point since.

Firpo made his 100th appearance for Leeds in the 2-0 win against Derby County earlier in December but sees his contract at Elland Road expire next summer.

Dominic Republic intentional Firpo is now sidelined for up to six weeks at Leeds United after picking up an injury, casting yet more doubt over his future in Yorkshire.

On Friday, the question of Firpo’s Leeds United future was put to manager Daniel Farke.

Daniel Farke speaks out on Junior Firpo’s Leeds United future

Speaking to the press on Friday ahead of the Preston clash on Saturday afternoon, Farke discussed Firpo’s Leeds United future ahead of his contract expiry in the summer of 2025.

Farke said: “We are delighted with his development but it’s much, much too early to speak about anything that happens beyond the summer.”

The German’s response prompted debate among Leeds fans on social media with many keen to see Firpo moved on.

One Leeds fan said Firpo is ‘too expensive to pay in the Championship and not good enough for the Prem’, whilst another simply said Firpo is ‘awful, let him go’.

There seems to be a shared opinion that Firpo just isn’t worth the money. One Leeds fan said: “I wouldn’t offer him a new deal. He’s very expensive and he was not particularly good at that level.”

Another added: “High earner, not good enough if we get promoted, business says let him leave,” with a similar comment reading: “A new deal would be north of £60k-a-week, regular injuries. 29 next year and just not good enough for the Premier League.”

Other weighed in saying Firpo is ‘obviously going’ and that ‘it’s probably best for both’, whilst another said Firpo’s transfer fee has been ‘more than amortised’.

A final comment said: “I like Junior Firpo but the reality is if we go up then we would need to improve the left-back quality anyway so don’t see the value of the club looking to extend at this point.”

European outfit wants to sign Junior Firpo in January

The January transfer window is opening in little over two weeks and there’s already reported interest in Firpo.

It was recently revealed that Besiktas want to sign Firpo in January which, given his contract situation and his high wages, could be a good chance for Leeds to make back a bit of money on the full-back.

First and foremost, though, Firpo will be focussed on making his return to fitness.
