Leeds told to go and buy 26-year-old player for £20m this summer, he’s in the ‘shop window’

One question mark that sits alongside Leeds United’s pursuit of promotion is the long-term future of Joe Rodon, with the centre-back on a dry loan from Tottenham – and Brian Deane has had his say.

Rodon, 26, has probably been our best signing of the Daniel Farke era. Ethan Ampadu, Ilia Gruev and Glen Kamara have been superb – but Rodon probably sits above those in terms of his impact at Leeds.

He’s played 37 times for Leeds already, helping Leeds keep 16 clean sheets. A constant in the defence, with centre-back partners often changing – Liam Cooper, Pascal Struijk and Ampadu all partnering him.

Leeds will be desperate to make his loan a permanent signing, and Rodon has made it clear he would like to play for Leeds in the Premier League. But it might require promotion to get a deal done for Rodon.

For two reasons – financially, Leeds may need Premier League cash to warrant spending an eight-figure fee on Rodon. And, there is Premier League interest in him. Brian Deane has urged Leeds to do a deal.

“If he fits into the category of being good enough for the Premier League, then they should pay the money; £20m now is just an average price for a Premier League player. Having played in the team and having that chemistry helps justify the transfer fee, but he’s definitely in the shop window right now.

“Look at Ben White, he came up to Leeds and was an absolute superstar, went back to Brighton and then £50m later at Arsenal. It gives the player the opportunity, the parent club of the player the opportunity to have him in the shop window, and it’s a great position for everybody,” Deane told FLW.

If Leeds can get a deal done for Rodon, then the scouring network and transfer set-up at Leeds – as well as Farke – deserve praise. Deane is right, we would rather overpay for Rodon, than not have him at all.

A fee of £20m would be overpaying for Rodon, given he is in the final year of his contract at Spurs and that he has no future there. But if it turns into a bidding war, Leeds must pay enough to win that race.
