Leeds United were beaten 2-0 by AS Monaco in their second pre-season friendly of the summer at the York Stadium Leisure Complex. Here are our player ratings:
First half:
Illan Meslier – 7
Looked much more assured between the sticks than he did last season, all be it without much to do. Was tidy in possession, too.
Luke Ayling – 6
Monaco got in behind him early on but was solid enough at right-back. Might’ve been a friendly, but he wasn’t afraid to put in a few meaty challenges.

Pascal Struijk – 7
Cleared a couple of Monaco corners which was promising to see and looked pretty solid on the whole. Again, didn’t have a massive amount to do.
Liam Cooper – 6
Like Struijk, didn’t have a great deal to do but was tidy enough in build-up. Held the defensive line well by catching Monaco offside a couple of times.
Leo Hjelde – 6
A slightly ropey start getting caught out with a couple of switches over his head, but it’s already pretty evident he is more than good enough to play a part this season. Tidy in possession in the main.
Ethan Ampadu – 8
Can already tell how important he will be under Farke, constantly looking for the ball. A couple of rusty passes but equally, some excellent ones over the top that set up chances for Luis Sinisterra and Georginio Rutter. Two brilliant interventions at the other end as well.
Archie Gray – 6
Busy in midfield and looked confident in possession. On that evidence, he certainly has what it takes to play some minutes in the Championship this season.
Dan James – 4
Didn’t really get into the game much aside from a few decent crosses. Feels like a waste playing him on the left when Sinisterra and Summerville are both on the pitch, and wasted some good opportunities in the second half.
Luis Sinisterra -5
Like James, couldn’t really get into the game but it’s clear he is so much better when he starts on the left. A lesson to be learned for Farke.
Crysencio Summerville – 7
With three out and out wide men starting, Summerville was the one tasked with playing centrally, which actually seemed to suit him. Neat and tidy in tight spaces, and as dangerous as always when running with the ball.

Georginio Rutter – 5
Feeding off scraps for the majority of the game and still feel as though he would be better playing just off the front. Not quite got that striker’s instinct.
Notable substitutes:
Charlie Cresswell – 5
A tad rash and perhaps lucky not to give away a penalty. Didn’t cover himself in glory for Monaco’s second.
Joe Gelhardt – 6
Some decent passes in the number 10 position but didn’t really get into the game a great deal as Monaco enjoyed more of the ball in the second half. The best of the substitutes.
Willy Gnonto – 5
Like Sinisterra in the first half, wasted on the right. Gave away the penalty for Monaco’s opener but arguably a little bit unlucky.
