Carlos Carvalhal has confirmed on Instagram that he has left La Liga side Celta Vigo after keeping the Spanish club in the top tier on the final day with a win over Barcelona – amid reports that Leeds could bring him back to England.
Carvalhal, 57, will be remembered on these shores for his couple of seasons at Sheffield Wednesday – and then with Swansea in the Premier League. The Portuguese boss joined Celta in November 22, his 21st role spell a manager.
With Celta struggling, Carvalhal guided Celta to safety in his 29 games in charge. It came after a 2-1 win over Barca, a side that included Raphinha, on the last day of the La Liga season. He spoke after, saying he could leave the club.
The Sun on Sunday (4/6; page 60) reported that Carvalhal is being considered by Leeds and now, the ex-Sporting, Braga and Besiktas manager has confirmed his exit. He took to Instagram to inform fans that he is leaving Celta.

Carvalhal would be a very solid appointment. Much like many of the managers that have been linked, it is hardly going to excite Leeds fans – but given we are in the Championship, we can hardly expect much better than him.
A manager that has been there and done it in the Championship, in the Premier League, in Portugal, in Turkey, in Spain, in Greece and in the Middle East. Huge experience, attractive football and promotion on his CV. Solid choice.
But is he the man to get fans going? Leeds could do a lot worse but there are others that may end up at Elland Road that would delight the fans further. Time will tell where the 49ers decide to go, but a decision must be made soon.
