Carlos Carvalhal has emerged as an option for Leeds United in the last few days and the Portuguese boss has now spoken about his future – admitting he could still leave Celta Vigo, despite keeping them in La Liga on the final day.
Carvalhal has of course spent time in English football, spending two and a half years at Sheffield Wednesday. His 131 games in charge of the Owls between 2015 and 2017 is the most amount of games he has managed at one club.
In December 2017, he moved to Swansea – lasting the second half of the season before returning to Portugal with Rio Ave. He has managed 20 different clubs, 21 different spells – taking charge of Braga on two separate occasions.
The Sun on Sunday (4/6; page 60) reported that Carvalhal is being considered by Leeds. He has a contract with La Liga side Celta until June 2024, meaning his future is hardly secure. Compensation is needed, but not expensive.
That is despite guiding Celta Vigo to safety with a stunning final-day 2-1 win over Raphinha’s Barcelona. Speaking after the huge victory, Carvalhal openly admitted that he might still leave Celta – in what was a disappointing year.
He told Spanish outlet COPE over the weekend: “At this moment, it’s not clear to me if I want to stay at Celta. I don’t want to experience a situation like this next year. To be at a club, I need a budget that satisfy me [this summer].
“For the rest, we have to talk. I don’t cling to contracts. I never have. It depends on objectives, the players, the conditions. And, on the contrary, if the board thinks that (my time at Celta) is over, we will solve it in a minute.”

Would he be the man to take Leeds forward? It is a tricky one. Carvalhal speaks openly about not wanting to be a part of a relegation scrap again. At Leeds, he wouldn’t be next season. But ultimately, he would be if we go up.
A man with enormous experience. A manager closing in on 800 appearances in professional football as a boss. He has experience of English football – both in the Championship, and in the Premier League. He could be available.
