Leeds eye three central midfielders, but we need potential £10m bargain the most in next fortnight

Leeds United’s work in the transfer market seems to have taken an upward turn as the Whites look to make some signings – with three midfielders linked, in Jonjo Shelvey, Glen Kamara and Lewis O’Brien.

The Whites have lost Adam Forshaw, Weston McKennie, Tyler Adams and Marc Roca – but have only brought in Ethan Ampadu. Clearly, it is an area Leeds are trying to improve before the end of the window.

In recent says, the club have been linked with Shelvey after a bust-up with Steve Cooper. Some reports say Kamara is close. So, which of the three do we need the most? Here, we rank the three options:

3. Jonjo Shelvey (Forest)

We simply do not need Shelvey. While we need midfielders, six-time England man Shelvey is a no.4 and we have Ethan Ampadu for that role. What is the point in signing a player to play in the same position?

TeamTalk say we have made a move, with Forest keen to sell. But at 31, he is past his best. Leeds need energy in the middle of the park and Shelvey is not that. We need a partner for Ampadu, not a back-up.

2. Glen Kamara (Rangers)

The Finland star is certainly an improvement. A player that can play in a number of central midfield roles. He can cover Ampadu, but his best role is as a 6. In front of the holding midfielder, superb on the ball.

The ex-Arsenal academy star’s passing is superb, especially when passing short. Good tempo. But, ask some Rangers fans and you might be told his work rate is lacking. The Scottish Sun say we are close.

1. Lewis O’Brien (Forest)

O’Brien is just what Leeds need. Kamara would be a solid signing and getting him in as well as O’Brien would be ideal. But if we had to pick one, O’Brien is perfect. He plays as a no.6 or a no.8 with Ampadu.

A long-term target and Mateusz Klich’s teammate at DC United, O’Brien is technically superb, strong – but most of all, his energy in midfield suits us. Alan Nixon says we could get him for £10m. A bargain.
