Leicester are reportedly in talks to sign Tottenham man Harry Winks ahead of the 2023-24 Championship season, amid links with Leeds United – and if we do not battle Leicester for his signature, then we are making a big mistake.
Recently, Italian outlet Samp News 24 said that Leeds were looking at a move for the England man. Winks, 27, spent last term on loan at Andrea Radrizzani’s new side Sampdoria. He played 20 times, after overcoming an ankle issue.
But, the report said that Ange Postecoglou wanted to take a look at Winks before making a decision. Fast forward a few weeks, and The Telegraph say Leicester are in talks to land Winks. Spurs and Leicester are set to do business.
Leicester are about to rubber stamp a £40m move for James Maddison to join Spurs. Winks looks likely to go the other way, in a separate deal. But, Leeds cannot let their Championship rivals land Winks, and must hijack a transfer.
A player that would suit us, according to Nigel Martyn during an interview with LeedsUnited.News in the past. Not only do we need midfielders, do we need a ball-playing anchor man like Winks – but also, Leicester will be rivals.
Leeds making a big mistake if we do not battle Leicester for Harry Winks
There is a rivalry beginning to form with Leicester. The Jack Harrison saga in January, links with Brendan Rodgers, the 1-1 draw at Elland Road and now, both clubs likely to be right in the mix for the Championship title this season.
Letting Winks go to Leicester without trying to secure a deal ourselves would be a real blow. Leeds are likely to lose Tyler Adams and Marc Roca. Adam Forshaw’s future is in doubt. Weston McKennie has already returned to Italy.
So, Leeds need a midfielder. Winks is the perfect mix of bite and technical ability that would suit Leeds. But instead, it looks as if Winks will go to a direct rival – as the race for the Championship title already starts to take shape.
