Leeds United saw a £2 million offer rejected by West Bromwich Albion for striker Brandon Thomas-Asante on deadline day.
That is according to reporter Simon Watts, who shared the claim on ITV’s EFL highlights show at the weekend while covering West Brom’s 2-1 defeat to Huddersfield Town.
Leeds were in the market for attackers during the final hours of the window with Luis Sinisterra having made the post-deadline loan move to Bournemouth.
Given the late nature of Sinisterra’s exit, Leeds were scrambling around for potential replacements with Thomas-Asante one of several potential targets, which was reported by the Daily Mail.
Eventually, Leeds settled on a deal that saw Jaidon Anthony move to Elland Road as part of a transfer that saw Sinisterra make the switch to the South Coast.
Leeds made ‘cheeky’ Thomas-Asante bid
However, before Anthony’s arrival, it is said that Leeds made a ‘cheeky’ £2 million offer for Thomas-Asante, which clearly did not tempt West Brom into selling.
ITV’s Watts said: “The Baggies turned down some pretty cheeky £2million bids from Stoke and Leeds for Brandon Thomas-Asante last week, he showed his value to the team with a perfect ball to John Swift to equalise [vs Huddersfield Town].”
Thomas-Asante is primarily a striker and would not have replaced Sinisterra directly but would’ve offered a different type of threat to Daniel Farke’s front-line.
The 24-year-old actually scored against Leeds for West Brom in the two sides’ meeting earlier this season, controversially putting the Baggies ahead with his hand.
However, ultimately a deal never materialised and Leeds will no doubt be happy with the replacement they have managed to find given his track record in the Championship.
