Joe Gelhardt’s future will be a huge talking point at Leeds United this summer. But what happens to the forward, and where he ends up remains a bit of a mystery.
Joe Gelhardt got his wish in January. He simply wanted to play regular football which he wasn’t getting at Leeds United. But he got that on loan at Hull City.
Hull City manager Ruben Selles hailed Gelhardt’s performances for the Tigers as the 23-year-old eventually went on to score five in 20 Championship outings for Hull, who went on to beat the drop via goal difference on the final day.
And Hull City fans want to sign Gelhardt on a permanent deal in the summer. Indeed, it’s been reported that Leeds United will listen to offers for Gelhardt in the summer transfer window, but who comes in for him remains to be seen.
Expect Hull and perhaps a number of other Championship clubs to be keen with Gelhardt having been linked with QPR among others in the past.

Ruben Selles now faces uncertain future at Hull City
For Gelhardt and indeed for Leeds United, news coming out of Hull City will be of great interest. Journalist Darren Witcoop is now reporting that Selles is facing an uncertain future at the MKM Stadium despite beating the drop and that’ll no doubt play a factor in whether or not Hull make a move to sign Gelhardt or not.
It could also prompt other clubs to make their move for Gelhardt knowing that Hull City could be undergoing some changes in the summer, and that any possible Tigers move for Gelhardt could be put on the backburner whilst their situation is sorted out.
How much Leeds want for Gelhardt remains to be seen. But expect the 49ers to want to reclaim the £1million fee that the club paid for Gelhardt back in 2020, and expect his stock to have risen following a positive spell at Hull City.
Joe Gelhardt drops major hint over his Leeds United future
With promotion to the Premier League will come a new influx of quality players at Elland Road. Especially up top we could see Daniel Farke make some wholesale changes and it looks set to leave Gelhardt well out of the picture.
A summer move then still seems highly likely despite the situation at Hull City. And Gelhardt has already hinted at leaving Leeds United this summer, saying in April: “I wasn’t playing at Leeds, and now I’ve got a taste of football. I don’t want to be sitting on a bench and not playing my football.
“I’ve enjoyed it so much here [at Hull], so I’d like to play football again next year. I don’t know where that’s going to be, but I definitely want to be playing football.”
The summer transfer window opens for Premier League clubs on June 1st until June 10th to accommodate for the Club World Cup, then reopening on June 16th for the summer. Expect there to be plenty of rumours and stories on Gelhardt’s future in the next few weeks then.
