Joel Robles has confirmed he will not be returning to Leeds United next season.

The 33-year-old posted a message on his official Instagram account thanking everyone at the club for his 12 months at Elland Road despite the ‘bitter taste of relegation’.

Up until yesterday, Robles‘ future at Leeds was still up in the air with the goalkeeping having named on Leeds’ released list last month.

Despite that, there was still hope that Robles would be at Leeds for another season with the option of signing a new contract on the table.

He found himself in the same situation as midfielder Adam Forshaw, who as of yet, has also not committed his future to Leeds amid the offer of a renewal on reduced terms.

Robles confirms he is leaving Leeds

Having spent the entirety of the season as Illan Meslier’s number two, Robles was brought in for the final four Premier League games under Sam Allardyce having been an ‘incredible’ figure around the training ground, according to Marc Roca.

Robles brought a far more assured presence between the sticks, but ultimately it wasn’t enough to secure survial, which the Spaniard says still leaves him frustrated.

He wrote in a parting message: “The time has come to say goodbye. It’s never easy to leave a club that has treated me so well and where I have enjoyed Premier League football again. I want to thank all my teammates, staff, board and fans for the way you have made me feel since day one. I have felt truly at home.

“I leave with the bitter taste of not having managed to keep the team in the Premier League for another year, but I am convinced that this year, Leeds and its wonderful fans, will return to the place they deserve.”

Robles’ exit brings an extra element of uncertainty to the goalkeeping situation this summer with Meslier also expected to leave before the end of the window.

Leeds are already on the lookout for one new shotstopper with Karl Darlow and Alexander Nubel among those linked.

Much will depend on whether Leeds believe Kristoffer Klaesson is in need of a loan elsewhere to play regularly, or if he is ready to be number two.
