Leeds United are yet to receive any offers for goalkeeper Illan Meslier.
That is according to Phil Hay, who was speaking on the latest episode of the Square Ball Podcast, where he explained how Leeds are expecting Meslier to go, but have not yet had any bids.
Meslier endured a nightmare second half of the season at Leeds with a string of costly errors eventually seeing dropped to the bench in place of Joel Robles under Sam Allardyce.
Other than the odd game here and there, it was the first time Meslier had lost his place for a considerable period of time since making his league debut in a 4-0 win at Hull City in March 2020, deputising for Kiko Casilla.
The 23-year-old had been attracting interest from some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs, with Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur all having held an interest in him.
Throughout Leeds’ three years in the Premier League, Meslier was rarely well-protected by his defence, with Micah Richards singling him out as ‘excellent’ for the number of saves he was forced to make.
Leeds yet to receive offer for Meslier
Following such a nightmare run of performances, interest in his services now appears to be scarce, which is reflected in the fact Leeds have not yet received an offer for him.
However, Leeds are still of the belief that he will depart this summer, with Hay claiming there is a mutual feeling that a departure would be best for all parties.
He said: “Well, no bids for Meslier yet. I don’t think last season or the season before has done a huge amount for his reputation or his options in the market but I think the club certainly expect there to be some offers that are good enough.
“There does seem to be this feeling that it would be for the best for him to seek fresh pastures, start again and develop in a way he hasn’t been developing at Leeds.”
As Hay mentioned, it would be beneficial for everyone if Meslier moved on, with him needing to get his career back on track and Leeds needing a more reliable number one.
It appears as though Leeds will be going down the more experienced market for a new goalkeeper this summer, with Karl Darlow seemingly a top target due to his strong reputation in this division.
There is no doubt Meslier still has the potential to be a top ‘keeper given he is only 23, but he need to go and fulfil that elsewhere.
