Jesse Marsch spent just under a year as manager of Leeds United.
Marsch was brought in as Marcelo Bielsa’s replacement at the end of February 2022 and was sacked just less than 12 months later, in what was a really difficult period for the club.
His arrival brought a lot of changes both on and off the pitch in terms of tactics, the playing squad, and of course, the coaching staff, with Marsch being handed the opportunity to bring in plenty of his own.
On paper, one of the best appointments Marsch made in his backroom setup was Rene Maric, who was, and still is, a very highly rated young coach who had been at Borussia Dortmund prior to Leeds.
Maric has been speaking on the latest episode of the Training Ground Guru Podcast reflecting on his time at Leeds. He says he did not do the job he wanted at Elland Road, but is still actually ‘in touch’ with people at the club now, and is always looking out for the results.

He said: “I think there was some turmoil in terms of the higher-ups. That’s not a criticism, that’s normal. I’m very disappointed that it didn’t work out, I still track every result, in touch with the coaching staff and giving them ideas and wishing them luck.
“In terms of the way I worked my role, I wanted to do it better, if I could redo it there are things I would’ve done differently, I would’ve worked differently, for myself and from my own perspective, I didn’t do the job I wanted to.”
Maric was obviously let go at the same time as Marsch and was gutted by his exit from Leeds. Reading between the lines of these latest quotes would suggest he perhaps wasn’t happy with the way Marsch operated. It is not the first time he has hinted at this.
The 31-year-old remains well thought of in the game and is now actually in a new role at Bayern Munich, which is more evidence that he has a long career ahead of him in the coaching game.
Clearly Maric is someone who fell in love with the club during his time here and who knows, maybe there will be a role for him sometime in the future under better circumstances.
