If reports are true, signing player hampers Darko Gyabi pathway into Leeds United XI

Leeds United have reportedly joined the race for Paris Saint-Germain star Edouard Michut after he turned down a permanent move to Sunderland – but surely, landing the French gem hampers Darko Gyabi’s path to the starting XI.

Michut, 20, played 28 times for Sunderland last season. But speaking to L’Equipe, he said he turned down a move to Sunderland beyond his loan – because of issues contractually, and in terms of Tony Mowbray’s style of football.

So, he returns to PSG – where his chances of game time are almost zero. He hardly pulled up trees on Wearside – even if there were glimpses. He could not nail down a regular place in the side. Michut has a deal until June 2025.

Leeds have signed 44-time Wales star Ethan Ampadu for an initial £7m from Chelsea. Tyler Adams could be set to remain, and Adam Forshaw’s priority remains to stay at Leeds, as per The Mail. But Gyabi is expected to come in.

The ex-Man City man starred for the 21’s last season, helping them win in the play-offs. He also played three times for our senior side, and impressed in Argentina this summer with England’s U20 side. He captained England’s U19’s.

So, this season – especially after relegation – Gyabi is seen as a player that will make a breakthrough into the first team. Along with the likes of Cody Drameh and Charlie Cresswell. Possibly, even Leo Hjelde on the left of defence.

Archie Gray is likely to have an impact here and there, off the bench, maybe the odd start. But Gyabi is expected to play a key role. So, signing a player like Michut – who is no improvement on Gyabi – will surely hamper his progress.

Gyabi is getting nothing from another season in PL2. He needs first-team game time. He has got to start for Leeds – or go. If Leeds are to sign midfielders, go for a more experienced one – like Forshaw. Not a similar profile to Gyabi.

If Michut joined, preference would have to be given to the Frenchman over £5m Gyabi and with Adams and Ampadu, possibly even Forshaw on side, Gyabi would be firmly on the bench. Michut is a talent, but a pointless signing.
