If reports are true, 49ers are about to make their first Leeds mistake as Everton circle

Leeds United announced their retained list on Monday and as things stand, Joel Robles will leave the club at the end of the month with Everton interested – but The 49ers are making a mistake if they let him to return to The Toffees.

Robles, 32, was made to wait before getting a run in the starting XI – finally coming in for the last four League games under Sam Allardyce. Illan Meslier was dropped, and the Spaniard came in. He finishes the season with five outings.

The ex-Everton, Wigan and Betis man only signed a 12-month deal and is now looking at a summer in which he will have to find a new club. Leeds confirmed he is leaving at the end of the month. But, he may still renew his contract.

Sky Sports reporter Tim Thornton says Leeds are in talks to extend Robles’ deal – as well as Adam Forshaw. It is believed that the decision not to extend his contract gives an incoming manager the choice over whether to keep.

But that might not be enough. The Sun say Sean Dyche wants Robles to return to Everton. But that would be a huge mistake by the incoming owners and Angus Kinnear. The club have got to keep him away from Everton’s clutches.

While it is understandable that the club are waiting to make a decision on Robles until they appoint a new manager, The 49ers need to forget about being patient – and just hand him a new deal. Largely, for two reasons this summer.

The first, being Illan Meslier. The Frenchman is likely to go in order to bring in some much-needed cash given he is one of our most-sellable assets. The other, is that Robles is the ideal kind of goalkeeper for a Championship team.

Robles is a commanding, physical goalkeeper that emits leadership and helps a defence organise. From set-pieces, he is more than able to come an collect a cross. Robles and Meslier going means we need two. We must keep him.
