David Prutton has given his thoughts on Leeds United’s title aspirations ahead of tonight’s clash with Leicester City.
The Championship’s top two go head-to-head under the lights at Elland Road in what is arguably the biggest game of the season so far, for both sides, despite Enzo Maresca’s mind games.
Leeds enter the match on the back of an eight-match winning run in the league and know that a ninth could move them to within six points of their opponents, who have been the division’s pace-setters pretty much all season.
However, defeat for Leicester would very much leave them looking over their shoulders for the first time, which makes for an enthralling contest this evening.
Writing in his latest weekly column for the Yorkshire Evening Post, Prutton still believes Leeds can pip Leicester to top spot come the end of the season, but only with a win tonight.
Prutton says Leeds need win over Leicester
He said: “If the gap becomes six points then absolutely Leeds can still win the title. Of course. That would then put them in a position where it is not insurmountable at all and it becomes a very realistic target I think given what we’ve seen from them and what we know they are capable of.
“It is absolutely still within their grasp and that has been said before in this column even when Leicester were further ahead.”
Prutton is right. Leeds need to bring that gap down to six if they still have any hope of lifting the title as Leicester’s consistency this season means a nine or 12 point gap at this stage will leave them too much to do.
The former Leeds midfielder, though, does not believe there will be anything to split the two teams and has gone for a 2-2 draw in his latest predictions column for Sky Sports.
In terms of the race for second, a point would not be a bad result for Leeds considering the fixtures they have coming up, but they will be eager to continue the winning run.
