Daniel Farke says he loved the fact Crysencio Summerville looked to stay on his feet to score a goal in the second half of Leeds United’s defeat at Sunderland.
With the score at 0-0, Summerville raced onto a header from Glen Kamara and burst beyond Jack Clarke to put himself in on goal with only the ‘keeper to beat.
However, Clarke was able to catch up with Summerville by pulling him back, with the £1.3 million Leeds man opting to stay on his feet and drive towards the box instead.
Summerville was able to get a shot off in a fairly decent position, but speaking in his post-match press conference, Farke believes had he been more experienced, he would’ve gone down and got his opponent a red card.
He said: “Summerville, at 32, he goes down and there is a red card. I love the naivety to go and score the goal. Perhaps he should have done it in a different way.”
Summerville should’ve gone down
With the form he is in, it is hard to blame Summerville for staying on his feet and going for goal himself, but perhaps the better option would’ve been to go down.
That said, it sums up the standard of refereeing in this country that you have to go to ground in order to win yourself the free-kick, no matter the contact.
Effectively, all that sort of decision does is encourage diving and it is why players go down so easily in this day and age, so fair play to Summerville for staying on his feet.
On the other hand, Farke is definitely right in the fact a more experienced player would’ve gone down, won his side a red card and took advantage from there.
That said, Summerville’s decision not to go down is not the reason Leeds lost, with midweek away defeats now becoming a recurring theme.
