Willy Gnonto has won his place back in the Leeds United side and after his brace against Swansea City on Tuesday night, you would fully expect the Italian to start come Saturday night at Plymouth.
It comes after refusing to play at the start of the season, being given another chance by Daniel Farke but also being made to wait for a run – and then in January, getting a run with Dan James suffering an injury.
He has scored four goals since the turn of the year, including two of our four at Swansea – and, a winner against Bristol City. Graeme Bailey told LeedsUnited.News he had agreed a new contract, in principle.
Phil Hay told The Square Ball this week that Leeds still want to do a deal for Gnonto and were close at the end of January – despite reports dying off in the last few weeks. Perhaps, due to the busy schedule.
Now, Ian Harte has told the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast that he has heard Leeds are trying to tie him down to a new contract. The former Leeds defender also spoke about his refusal to play in August.
“That was what was portrayed in the press and the media [he went on strike]. That he was trying to get out of the football club. But I also hear that Leeds are trying to tie him down on a longer-term deal.”

Gnonto has been excellent in recent matches and should he continue this form, he is only going to attract suitors ahead of the summer. And, it will tempt Italy to look at him for Euro 2024 this summer.
Clubs will come in for Gnonto this summer – whether Leeds are in the Premier League, or the second tier. But handing him a new deal at least gives Leeds power – or, inserting a big release clause for him.
