Willy Gnonto scored twice on Tuesday night and took his tally to five goals for the season, four of which have come since the turn of the year – but talk of a new deal has dried up since the window.
The 20-year-old has been superb for Leeds. One of a number of fringe players coming into the side in January that have almost been like new signings – like Junior Firpo, Ilia Gruev and Patrick Bamford, too.
Fabrizio Romano reported in the January window that a new deal for Gnonto was getting close. It comes after Gnonto refused to play last August, but has worked himself back into the side under Daniel Farke.
Graeme Bailey told LeedsUnited.News a deal had been agreed in principle. But, since those reports in January, nothing has emerged – perhaps given the volume of games Leeds have had to play of late.
Speaking on the latest episode of The Square Ball, Hay was asked about Gnonto signing a new contract. He says that Leeds are still intent on handing the Italy star a new contract and want to get that done.
“It was the back end of the window. Leeds definitely felt like they were getting close with it and definitely do want to tie him down. The end of the window and the goal at Bristol City was really good for him.”

Gnonto did annoy Farke in the week despite his brace, with the Italian scoring two brilliant goals but also missing chances. Leeds scored four, but had they been relentless, they could have easily scored six.
It is unclear what Gnonto wants to do in regards to a new deal but the fact Leeds have got close is a sign that he is open to signing a contract. His current deal ends in the summer of 2027, at Elland Road.
