Robbie Savage believes Leeds United secured ‘one of the signings of the season’ in Ethan Ampadu from Chelsea.
Savage was speaking to TeamTalk about his Welsh compatriot Ampadu where he hailed him as ‘an absolute bargain’ for the initial £7 million Leeds are said to have paid for him.
Having spent the last four seasons out on loan in three different countries, Leeds finally offered Ampadu a permanent home in the summer to become the first signing under Daniel Farke and San Francisco 49ers Enterprises.
The 23-year-old has so far proved to be an inspired piece of business, playing every minute of every game under Farke, quickly establishing himself as a lynchpin in Leeds‘ midfield.
In that position just in front of the back four, Ampadu excels at winning the ball back quickly, but is also just as strong at keeping it when in possession.
Savage hails Ampadu as ‘absolute bargain for Leeds’
Speaking on the impact Ampadu has made at Elland Road, Savage believes he is a player who fits the way Farke wants to play perfectly, which is bringing the best out of him.
He said: “Ethan Ampadu – I am a huge fan of his. He’s been out on loan a few times but now he’s got his permanent move to Leeds and I think for the money they paid – and £7m is the figure suggested – it’s an absolute bargain for Leeds United – one of the signings of the season. The way Daniel Farke wants to play is perfect to get the best out of him.
“I know he plays in that defensive midfield role with the likes of Glen Kamara and Archie Gray to compliment him, so the dynamic of that midfield drives them forward.”
With price and quality of player both taken into account, Ampadu is arguably Leeds’ best signing since Raphinha in the summer of 2020.
Ampadu is one of, if not the best player in the Championship in his position, as he has dominated almost every midfield he has come up against so far.
It is not often that Savage is full of praise for Leeds, so it shows just how well Ampadu is performing for him to say this type of thing.
