How Leeds United compare after 15 games to last season, and what that means for top two hopes

Leeds United currently sit in third place in the Championship table after 15 games, a third of the way into the 2024-25 campaign with Daniel Farke’s side hell-bent on promotion.

In Farke’s first season, the German repeated time after time that promotion might not be a possibility. Not after the way his first summer had panned out, and now after the way Leeds had struggled to begin with.

This season, it is different. Leeds have made it clear that promotion is the aim and after reaching the play-off final last season, going one better means finishing in the top two. Leeds are well-positioned, already.

After 15 games, Leeds sit on 29 points. Eight wins, five draws and two losses to Burnley and Millwall. Leeds have the best home record in the top-four divisions but, where do Leeds compare to last season?

Where Leeds United were after 15 games during 2023-24…

Despite a poor start to the season last time around, Leeds sat in third with 28 points from 15 games. But, the issue with last season at this stage – was that already, they were a massive 11 points behind Leicester.

Not just 11 behind Leicester, but also eight behind second-placed Ipswich. While that difference whittled down to a smaller number, Leeds finishing in the play-offs was always inevitable during last season.

How Leeds now compare to 2023-24 season after 15 games

Leeds still remain in third but it could have been so different. Had Illan Meslier not thrown the ball into his own goal in the dying moments against Sunderland or had Leeds taken their chances against Portsmouth.

Two games that ended in draws that really should have been Leeds wins. However, Leeds are in a solid position going into the busy Christmas period, one point better off than last season, with a total of 29.

The top three, this season:

But more importantly, Leeds are just two points behind Sheffield United in second and the same behind leaders Sunderland. The gap is crucially, much smaller and Leeds are well-placed to take full advantage.
